I’ve taught A-Level Computer Science for six years, with most of my students coming to me for help with programming and the more technical theory topics. Python is my main language, although I spend plenty of lesson time on algorithms, Boolean logic and data structures too. I like students to write and trace code themselves rather than simply watch me do it. Near exams, we switch heavily towards past papers and mark schemes.

Hi! I’m a Computer Science tutor and former software developer who has been teaching A-Level students alongside my industry work for the past four years. Programming is definitely my favourite part to teach, especially when we can debug a piece of code together and work out why it behaves strangely. I’m fairly relaxed in lessons, but I’m particular about pseudocode and making sure answers actually match what examiners are asking for.

My background is in computer engineering, and I have over eight years of experience tutoring A-Level Computer Science. I tend to work with students who understand the basics but lose marks on longer theory questions or unfamiliar algorithm problems. Lessons usually combine a short explanation with worked questions, code tracing and independent practice. I particularly enjoy teaching processor architecture, networking and data representation.

I started tutoring A-Level Computer Science while working as a programmer and found that I really enjoyed teaching the subject. Five years later, I still do both. I’m happiest teaching Python, recursion and algorithms, although I also cover the full theory syllabus. I often bring small bits of real code into lessons because they make abstract ideas much easier to discuss. If an exam is approaching, we spend more time looking closely at how marks are awarded.

I’ve been teaching A-Level Computer Science for just over ten years, first in the classroom and now mostly through one-to-one tuition. My approach is quite structured: we identify gaps in the specification, deal with those properly, then test them through exam questions. Students often ask me for help with databases, networking and algorithm design. I also spend time on written responses, as knowing the content and explaining it for six marks are different skills.

I’m a fairly recent Computer Science graduate, so I still remember which A-Level topics took me a while to get my head around! I’ve tutored the subject for three years and mainly work with students on Python, pseudocode and problem solving. I normally get students coding during the lesson rather than giving long explanations. Trace tables are a regular feature too. Before tests, I’m happy to go through past-paper mistakes line by line and find exactly where marks disappeared.

"My daughter was finding programming difficult and often got stuck when writing code on her own. Her tutor has been very patient and shows her how to solve problems one step at a time. She is making good progress and feels much more confident with coding now."

"My son needed extra support with algorithms and data structures. His tutor explains the topics clearly and uses plenty of examples during each lesson. We have already noticed an improvement in his schoolwork and he is enjoying Computer Science much more."
Greer|Parent of an A-Level Computer Science Student
"I was struggling with some of the theory topics and knowing what exam questions wanted from me. My tutor helped me understand the content and showed me how to write better answers. The lessons are always useful and I feel much more prepared for my exams."
